Since publishing this post K-Mart have changed stockists and some of these items are no longer available in their stores. Sorry for the inconvenience but hope the ideas will still inspire you. Thanks, Chrissy
Another easy craft inspired by the craft section at Kmart!! Here is what you need:
The first step is to wash the ‘Muslin Bags’. I just hand washed them in the sink with a bit of washing powder. Rinse the soap out thoroughly and do this just before dying as it works better when the muslin is wet.
Make up the ‘Tie dye’ according to the instructions – its easy, just a matter of adding water and giving them a shake! Pour the some of the dye into a container, I just used a chinese take away container. Fill up another container with clean water.
Dip your wet muslin bag about half way into the dye and letting the dye soak into the fabric. You don’t need to soak the bag for long for the dye to take hold. Remove from dye and rinse immediately in the clean water. The water will colour up due to the excess dye and this will lightly colour the top of the bag to achieve that ómbre effect. Ring out extra water and hang up to dry.
Repeat using other colours as desired.
When they are dry give them a quick iron. These look great just as they are, but if you want to embellish them a little here is an idea.
Cut a piece of ‘Natural Ribbon’ the width of the bag and attach to bag along centre with glue gun.
Choose a wooden shape and small wooden bead/s. Attach wooden shape to the centre of natural ribbon with glue gun. Attach wooden bead as well.
Untie the draw string and thread on 2 beads. You may need to cut the ends if they are too frayed and too difficult to thread through. Re tie ends with a knot.
Your bags are now ready to use. Fill with lollies for party bags.
If you keep them plain they could even be used as favour bags for a wedding!
