How to Make a Simple Baby Bib

Hey everyone! This is a really simple machine sewing project for beginners sewers but also a great, quick and easy project for the more experienced sewers out there. Makes a great ‘new baby’ gift!

They don’t need much fabric so I have used up a lot of my quilting scraps for this project. The backing is made of toweling so it makes them nice and soft and absorbent. You can purchase this on the roll at Spotlight or any fabric store, however I just purchased some cheap towels from the supermarket or department stores. If you use a darker colour they wont show up stains as easy.

You will need a piece of cotton fabric and toweling ~25cm x 35cm and 2 large press studs to complete this project. And of course you need the pattern – please click here to download it for free.

Here are the instructions on how to make this quick and easy bib….

Use the pattern to make templates of the bib with thick card or template plastic. DSC_0099[1]DSC_0100[1]

Using your template as a guide cut out a piece of cotton fabric leaving plenty of room around the edges of the template. Lay the cotton piece onto the toweling and cut around so that now you have a piece of cotton and toweling the same size.

DSC_0072DSC_0073Place the toweling piece down first and then the cotton on top with the wrong side facing up. Place the bib template onto the cotton fabric in central position and draw around the template with pen, pencil or washable fabric marker.

DSC_0074Mark the opening on your fabric as well.

DSC_0077Pin the two layers together.

DSC_0075Sew carefully along line with sewing machine, leaving the 4cm opening at the bottom

DSC_0080DSC_0081Cut gently along the outside edge of the bib leaving about a 6mm seam allowance along sewn line. Leave a larger allowance at the opening.

DSC_0082DSC_0083Turn right side out gently through opening. Use a very blunt large knitting needle to push out seams – do this very gently so that you don’t break the sewing.

Press flat with iron. Turn edges in at the opening and press flat. Pin in place if necessary.

DSC_0086DSC_0088Top stitch around the bib fairly close to the edge so that the top stitch will close the opening.

DSC_0091DSC_0095Position the press studs onto the bib and hand sew in place. Make sure these are sewn in place very securely.

DSC_0101Well done! Your bib is now ready for your little one to wear or to give as a gift.

Sewing not your thing or don’t have the time – head over to my Etsy Store and you can buy them already made. A great, unique and useful gift for the new mum!
