K-Mart Crafts Revisited! Part 1

Hello everyone. It’s been along time since my last post but I am back again with plenty of great ideas to share.

One of my viewers liked one of my K-Mart crafts and then told me that she went to K-Mart to get the supples and found that they no longer stocked what she needed. I can imagine the disappointment so I am very sorry!

I went to K-Mart as soon as I could to check it out and found that a lot has changed in their craft department. They seem to have swapped suppliers so some of their stock is the same just labelled differently. However a lot of things they have stopped stocking altogether. Such a shame but I suppose this happens with big business!

I got over my disappointment pretty quickly though and took up the challenge to come up with some new ideas! So my K-Mart posts will be similar but different to the previous posts but you can be assured that all you need you can find easily and cheaply at K-Mart.

I am sure that this won’t be the end of more changes so if you find that you can’t buy something where I said you can please let me know!

So here is my first simple craft made with craft supplies from K-Mart. It is similar to a previous post with a few changes. Hope you like it.

Christmas Cards – Music, Christmas Trees and Golden Splatter!

Hi everyone,

Did know that Christmas is only just over a month away. Where has this year gone?

To help you get into the spirit early here is an easy handmade Christmas card idea. I have used mixed media – paper, felt, buttons, paint, hessian/linen etc and I love machine sewing on cards. It quick and easy and looks awesome. I enjoy using a variety of media when making my cards as it just makes them that bit more interesting and appealing. (These cards will be for sale on my Etsy store if you haven’t the time or the gear to make them yourself)

You had better get cracking then on those handmade cards! Your friends and family will be impressed with these!! Here is some photos and instructions on how to make them…

Old music paper is hard to find so when you do get your hands on some it’s pretty precious – well to me anyway?? To make sure it never runs out I photocopy mine and you can bearly notice the difference between the original and the copy (if you don’t ever put them side by side that is).

Christmas Crafts – Organza/Tulle Peg Angels

This is a quick and easy Christmas craft to decorate the tree or give away as a stocking filler. Great to do together with a group of ladies.

You will need some wooden old fashioned pegs, white paint, ribbons, glitter paper, Bomboniere/favour circles with gold/silver trim, white plastic lollipop sticks and thin wool. Most of these things can be purchased at a craft shop or those cheap variety stores (in the craft section). The bomboniere circles are a little bit harder to find – I bought mine at Lincraft. They are made of either tulle or organza.

If you haven’t got time to go shopping I have kits for sale on my Etsy store. The best thing with the kits is that some of the steps are done for you – the pegs come already painted and the wing template is are already traced onto the glitter card.

Crazy Easy Gorgeous Christmas Cards

These would have to be one of the easiest Christmas cards to make. All you need is some scraps of Christmas paper and some sparkly diamantes. 

All you do is rip thin strips of paper into different lengths to position to look like a Christmas tree

 

 

 

 

 

Of course you can go to town with the embellishing with things like sequins, stars and snowflake hole punch shapes but try to keep it simple. If you are using plain cards you could decorate with a simple Christmas stamp if you want to. I have use a snowflake stamp to give the background a bit of interesting detail, but plain would be fine too. You could also have some fun with some watered down paint and a toothbrush to give that flicked paint effect.

This is a fun craft to do in a group as it is easy and you don’t need much equipment and you could just gather together your paper scraps from last season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Craft Inspired by K-Mart, Part 6 – Origami Flowers in Terracotta Pots

Hello again. Another craft inspired by craft supplies purchased only at K-Mart. This idea features one of my favourite crafts of all time – origami flowers. I have mentioned these in a previous post. They are so simple to make and look so effective.

These are the supplies you will need – all purchased at K-Mart in the craft department – 5x Designer Paper Pads, Mini Terracotta Pots, Beads Kit, Set of Colour Pencils, Washi Tape and a Bag of White Stones (you will find these in the Home Wares section). You will also need scissors, PVA Glue and a glue gun (you can also buy all these items at K-Mart)

The ”Thin” Scarf – Easy Crochet

Here is another one of my loves – Crochet! I tried knitting but found that with crochet  I could be a bit more creative. There are so many different stitches and patterns you can do.

This is an easy project and the fun and creativity is really in the type of yarn you use. I wait for a good sale at Spotlight and buy some unusual yarns at a good price to make these. Because it’s the yarn that makes them interesting, you don’t need to know how to do any fancy, complicated stitches.

The scarf is also thin so you don’t need as much yarn and it doesn’t take quite so long. I think the thin scarf is pretty stylish and more suitable for our Aussie winters (?well Brisbane ones anyway).

Here is one that I made just the other day. I used some really cool yarn called ”Oxley” that I bought at Spotlight on sale. It is a very textured yarn with a blend of colours and thicknesses which makes it quite interesting to work with. I used a large 9mm crochet hook for this one as the yarn is quite thick in places.

I taught myself how to crochet so I do not claim to be an expert by any measure. There are some great ‘How to Crochet’ books out there and plenty of videos on You Tube if you are interested.

One thing to be aware of here is that there are different stitch techniques and names depending on which country you are from. I learnt the UK stitch names and techniques and in this project I am using a Double Treble stitch. This stitch is the same as a Treble Crochet in the US version.

How to Make a Simple Baby Bib

Hey everyone! This is a really simple machine sewing project for beginners sewers but also a great, quick and easy project for the more experienced sewers out there. Makes a great ‘new baby’ gift!

They don’t need much fabric so I have used up a lot of my quilting scraps for this project. The backing is made of toweling so it makes them nice and soft and absorbent. You can purchase this on the roll at Spotlight or any fabric store, however I just purchased some cheap towels from the supermarket or department stores. If you use a darker colour they wont show up stains as easy.

You will need a piece of cotton fabric and toweling ~25cm x 35cm and 2 large press studs to complete this project. And of course you need the pattern – please click here to download it for free.

‘Best Wishes’ Card with Cute Wooden Shapes

Here is another card-making idea using a range of different media – card, recycled paper, fabric (linen), string (jute twine), buttons and wooden shapes.

I bought this great stack of recycled paper one day at a Florist/Gift Store. I have used this paper so much in my card making since I purchase it – luckily it was a big stack! I just love the recycled, old fashioned, rustic look to gives to my cards.

Simple Water Colour Painting – ‘Flowers’

Hi everyone,

I really felt like painting the other day so I got out my watercolours and watercolour paper pad and had a go.

I thought flowers would be cheery subject and so I stuck to that theme for the next few hours and came up with these creations. With flowers you really don’t need to come up with new ideas – you can find inspiration from others peoples artwork or from nature itself.

The different shapes and colours of flowers is endless. I found my inspiration from a folk art book that I found online but you can find ideas from all sorts of places – greeting cards, gift wrapping, kids books, art books, fabrics – flowers appear as a decorating feature on lots of things, you just need to look around! I

Dyed Muslin and Lace – ‘Favour Bags’

I purchased some muslin bags the other day from Kmart. They were cute but plain and I thought they needed some embellishing to make them a bit prettier. I came up with the idea of dying them with the dye from Kmart which you can read all about in a previous post. But then I thought what if the occasion you need them for doesn’t really suit the bright colours. The bright ones would be good for a kids birthday party but would not really be suitable for giving to guests at a wedding. And what about Mother’s day or Grandmas’ 70th! I came up with something a little more neutral and natural but still really pretty!

Handmade cards using ‘T2’ Recycled Packaging

I bought some cups from T2 the other day and they packaged them in this great tissue paper. It was so cool I couldn’t throw it out so I kept it stored in my craft room until I would need it for some craft project one day.

The inspiration finally came and the other day and I created these cards. Very simple yet effective using the tissue paper as the background feature.

Hippy Bunting – Simple Sewing with the Overlocker

This is a great craft if you have an overlocker. I purchased one late last year from ALDI for a good price. Its a Janome so I think it was a good buy. I’m not really a clothes sewer so I’m always on the look out for crafty ideas where I can use my new toy!

With bunting being so popular but also so fiddly to make I started to play around with the idea of trying to make it with my overlocker. With sewing and cutting happening at the same time I thought that trying it this way would cut out a few of the time consuming steps. This project is also a great way to get rid of all those scraps of material you don’t know what to do with.

So this is how I made this bunting, ‘overlocker style’.
